Championing excellence in public education through training, advocacy and service for local school boards

New Board Members

New board members are encouraged to learn as much as they can about their new role as a policymaker for their district. ASBA invites all newly elected school board members to a one-day workshop in the fall after the school elections. This workshop, known as the New Board Member Institute, is designed to ground newly elected board members in the fundamentals of board service, but many veteran members attend every year for review and updates.

The Institute focuses on the duties and responsibilities of school boards and school finance. It also includes a look at particular legal issues and provides a brief overview of ASBA, as well as time for participants to network with one another.
