ASBA Opens Registration for 2014 Annual Conference

Registration is open for the Arkansas School Boards Association 2014 Annual Conference. This year's theme is "Student Focused Leadership: See Me, Accept Me, Teach Me." The conference will be held December 10-12 at the Marriott Hotel and Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock. Click here for conference schedule.Manny-ScottManny Scott, one of the original Freedom Writers, is this year’s featured keynote speaker for the general session Thursday, Dec. 11, 8:30-10 a.m. in the Marriott Ballroom. In keeping with our conference theme, “See Me, Accept Me, Teach Me,” Mr. Scott will share his inspirational story of how he went from being “unreachable” and “unteachable” to becoming a happily married man, a doting father, a Ph.D. student, an entrepreneur and a successful speaker.

Early Bird Workshops

This year board members may choose from two pre-conference workshops. Both will be offered on Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. until noon. Each workshop registration fee is $90 before Nov. 26, 2014. After that date, the fee is $110.
Early Bird Session 1: School Finance Fundamentals for Board Members Presenter: Jeff Stubblefield, Superintendent, Charleston School District
Participants attending this financial workshop will:
  • Review the historical overview of finance for Arkansas Public Schools
  • Recognize the General Assembly's role in determining funding for an adequate education for public school students
  • Review the board’s role instewardship and fiscal oversight, and compare the board’s role to the role of the superintendent’s in managing district financial matters
  • Become familiar with the major concepts within public school finance
  • Determine which financial information boards should review regularly
  • Review district data printouts to give board members an overview of their district’s financial position
  • Understand key indicators of a financially stressed district
Early Bird Session 2: Drafting Local Policies for Meeting Local NeedsPresenters: ASBA Staff - Kristen Garner, Lucas Harder and Ron Harder
Come prepared (perhaps with fellow board members!) to roll up your sleeves and customize one of three policies to be the best possible fit for your district! Choose to work on a local policy that would either: 1) govern the work assigned to the superintendent; 2) set out local and simplified rules of parliamentary procedure; or 3) state the circumstances under which public input would be permitted at a school board meeting. Kristen, Lucas and Ron will talk to you about the principles of good policy drafting. You will also work in small groups to think through potential issues, with the goal of creating a draft policy to take back with you that is responsive to your district’s unique needs.


The early-registration fee is $275 per person through November 26. After Nov. 26, the registration fee is $300. The fee includes the general sessions and breakout sessions Dec. 10-12; continental breakfast, refreshments, Exhibit Hall and the Awards Luncheon on Dec. 11; and the breakfast buffet on Dec. 12. A separate registration fee of $90 covers the cost of each Early Bird Workshop. Click here to register.Requests for cancellations must be in writing to Cancellation requests received through Dec. 3 will be refunded at 100 percent. Cancellation requests received after Dec. 3 will be refunded at 50 percent. There will be no refunds for cancellations after Dec. 9, 2014.
