FMLA August 1 Workshop

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) disputes are among the top five issues that land employers in the courtroom. It’s been a big part of HR departments for many years now, and it has only grown in importance. Are you prepared?  Do you have questions about FMLA? Are you concerned with employees who seem to be absent more than they are at work, but are unsure of next steps? How will the new Arkansas law requiring paid Maternity Leave for school employees work with FMLA? How does the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) interact with the FMLA? What are your district’s obligations under the federal Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) set to go into effect on June 27, 2023?

Do you or your team members responsible for the hands-on management and administration for absences, leave and FMLA really understand the intricacies and requirements of the laws that apply? Would you like your team to have the skills and knowledge needed to prevent misinterpreting or unintentionally not complying with the law?

Arkansas School Boards Association Staff Attorney Kristen Garner will team up with Missy Duke, Attorney with Cross, Gunter, Witherspoon and Galchus, P.C., for an intensive one-day virtual training on FMLA, the ADA, and other relevant laws and their impact on school districts, superintendents, and other central office staff who handle these issues daily. These live virtual trainings will be held via Zoom Video Communications, Inc. While board members may choose to register and attend, this training is geared toward central office employees who are responsible for administering FMLA, and school boards neither approve nor deny FMLA leave requests.

Morning Session (8:30-11:30): Basic FMLA

Attendees will get a comprehensive overview of the law, cover the duties and responsibilities of the employer, and the rights of the employee of FMLA. There will be a strong emphasis on the interplay with sick or other leave, leave taken for childbirth and child bonding, and the employee’s right to job restoration.

Afternoon Session (1:00 to 3:00): Advanced FMLA
The afternoon session will take up where the morning session left off and go in-depth with form completion, timelines, health insurance during FMLA, administrative responses, and real-world practice scenarios.

Attendees must attend both sessions to receive credit for the event. If you have registration questions, please contact Tammie Reitenger at treitenger@arsba.org. Please provide a current email address during registration. The Zoom link is in the confirmation email. Registration materials will be emailed to you prior to the eve
